THE WISDOM FACTORY SEASON #2
WISDOM TECHNOLOGIES
What do have Wisdom and Technology in common?
When we hear the term TECHNOLOGY we think about cell phones, computers, airplanes, artificial fibres and what not. And when we hear WISDOM we think about old men with white hair talking about the ultimate nature of the world – or we see thick philosophy books which cost us a lot of effort when we try to understand the concepts. And WISDOM is something which normally “belongs” to someone else. We are just normal people with no aspiration to Wisdom. Is it not?
Well, the question is what we understand by the term “Wisdom” – which the “free dictionary” defines as:
Wisdom is
- The ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting; insight.
- Common sense; good judgment: “It is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things” (Henry David Thoreau).
- The sum of learning through the ages; knowledge: “In those homely sayings was couched the collective wisdom of generations” (Maya Angelou).
- Wise teachings of the ancient sages.
- A wise outlook, plan, or course of action.
- Wisdom Bible Wisdom of Solomon.
Well, in our series we mainly refer to point one:”The ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting; insight” – while we always include the other points as well.
The series is about how to BECOME WISE, how to become more able to discern and judge what is “true and right” and, accordingly, what actions to take.
Wise people throughout the ages have trained themselves in order to do that. They have adopted TECHNOLOGIES which have helped them to become who they wanted to become. Well known practices were the discourse techniques in Greek Philosophy and meditation in the Eastern Wisdom Traditions. You might find it strange to call meditation a “Technology”.
Well, “Merriam-Webster” defines “Technology” as follows:
- the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems
- a machine, piece of equipment, method, etc., that is created by technology
Using the INTEGRAL MAP OF REALITY we can easily see that these definitions are restricted to the “outside quadrants”, to the material side of reality. But when we transfer these definitions to the “inside quadrants” of the non-material side of reality, to our own interiors and to the culture we are creating together, there is no doubt that we can “invent useful things and solve problems” with technologies which operate on our interiors – as for instance psychotherapy or meditation do.
Or, re-writing the definition of technology: a repeatable pathway or practice which, when used in a correct way, leads to the desired outcome. And that is exactly the definition above, transferred from the exclusive notion of material science to the “immaterial” inner science of humans.
Our series presented a whole variety of “TECHNOLOGIES” from the whole spectrum of reality, interior and exterior, individual and collective.
